Student Lighthouse Team Relaunch
Posted On:
Monday, April 16, 2018

This week, students will be introduced to the Student Lighthouse Team (SLT) at HMS.  In the past, we have had a student lighthouse team.  However, for the 2018-2019 school year, we are completely revamping the SLT in an effort to give students real and meaningful leadership opportunities and experiences.  So, if a student has been previously named a member of SLT, he or she will need to reapply and go through the application process.  It's not just a title anymore, so it will take some extra time and effort.

Here's an overview of the SLT process. The information below goes with the video link.

What is the student lighthouse team (SLT)?

  • The student lighthouse team is the student leadership team at HMS. Students on this team will help the teachers’ lighthouse team plan school events, participate in service projects, and serve as role models for students at HMS.

Who is on student lighthouse team?

  • Upcoming 6th and 7th graders apply in May.  Upcoming 5th grade students will apply in October after starting at HMS.  We will select a minimum of three students from each grade level to serve on SLT.  Once you are on SLT, expectations must be maintained or students can be put on probation or removed from the team.

What are the expectations?

  • Maintain good attendance

  • Complete all assignments

  • Maintain good grades

  • Show exemplary conduct and citizenship

  • Be able to stay after school each month for meetings (infrequently, as needed)

  • Practice the seven habits at school and at home

  • Participate in a summer service project with the Ronald McDonald House

What kinds of things will SLT do during the year?

  • Conduct the pop-tab drive for the Ronald McDonald House

  • Organize Leadership Day

  • Help PTO with fundraisers

  • Serve as tour guides for Leadership school visits

  • Create the HMS monthly newsletter to be shared with families via SMORE.

  • Any other leadership tasks that arise during the school year (like public speaking)

Does it cost anything to participate on SLT?

  • Students will purchase a t-shirt for the team and parents will need to help provide transportation to the summer service project.

What’s the application process?

  • Get an application from your teacher on or before April 18, 2018.

  • Fill it out ON YOUR OWN.  No adult help is allowed.

  • Turn the application in by the due date, May 4, 2018.  No late applications will be accepted. Turn in applications to MG Hicks in the office.

  • Once all applications are in, the top applicants will be asked to interview with Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Hicks on May 10, 2018.

  • Official notice of Lighthouse Team acceptance will be sent via the postal service. Letters will be mailed on May 15, 2018.
